みなさん、こんにちは！
第３号のメ−ルマガジンを開いていただき感謝いたします。
お盆も過ぎて、少し暑さも下がりくつろぎやすくなって来ました。
バイリンガルファミリ−の夏休みも残すところ
一週間ほどになって来ましたが、第２号に引きつづきアメリカでの
トピック（お話）と写真をお送りします。
どうぞごゆっくりご覧ください。

ようこそ！こんにちは！
バイリンガルファミリー・チームのジャン（Jan）です。
英語と日本語のバイリンガル（二言語使用）になって行けるように、
私たちの子供たちと一緒に学んで行きませんか。
皆さんは、よく私たちの子供達が英語と日本語をすらすらと流暢に話し
分けるの聞いてびっくりします。
それは、私がアメリカ人で夫が日本人なので、自然に出来るようになって
いると思ってますが、その事はそうではありません。
皆さんがバイリンガルになるには、３つのものを必要とします。
目標とそれに向かっての実行と練習（学習）です。
このメールマガジンの目的は、バイリンガルについての情報や案内を共有
して一緒に学んで行くことにあります。
バイリンガルの人たちや家族が実際どのようにして学んでいるかの方法
も紹介して行きたいと思います。
私たちは、実際的なテクニックと長期的な学習法も一緒に学んで行きます。
そして又、皆さんの色々な経験や体験談も聞いて行きたいと思います。
私たちは、自然な会話の音声レコーデイングや日本とアメリカの文化の
面白い違いのある写真ギャリーも取り入れて行きたいと思います。

BILINGUAL FAMILY eMAGAZINE
Would you like to join our two sons in becoming bilingual in English
and Japanese?
People are often amazed to hear our sons switch easily and fluently
between English and Japanese.
They believe that it comes naturally because I am an American and
my husband is Japanese, but this is not so.
You need three things to become bilingual: purpose, opportunity
and practice.
The purpose of this emagazine is to share information about
becoming bilingual.
There will be profiles of how real people and families are
becoming bilingual.
We will share techniques and strategies, and we would like to
hear your experiences, too!
We plan to incorporate audio recordings of natural conversation
and a photo gallery featuring interesting differences between
Japanese and American culture.

★ トピック 「 2006年 アメリカの夏休み パ−ト２」

♪ ミュ−ジックフェスト（ Musikfest ）♪
ミュ−ジックフェストは、ベスレヘム市で毎年夏の８月に開催される
無料の音楽とエンタ−ティメントフェスティバルです。

今年は天気がとても良く、１０日間のフェスティバルの間に、
１１０万人もの来場者がありました。それは、毎日１０万人以上の人々です！
私たちは、ヒップホップ、リズムアンドブル−ス、民族のフォ−クダンス、
あやつり人形のショ−と日本のジャズピアニストのヒロミ・ウエハラの演奏
などを見ました。彼女はとても際立つショ−を行い、
聴衆は彼女にスタンディングオベイションを贈りました！！
とてもたくさんの催し物があったので、イベントの
１０％さえも見れせんでした。
来年はもっとたくさん見たいと思います。

★ Summer Vacation 2006 Part 2
♪ Musikfest ♪
Musikfest is a free music and entertainment festival held
in Bethlehem every summer. http://www.fest.org/
The weather was very good this year, and 1.1 million people
came for the 10-day festival.
That is over 100,000 people every day!
We saw hip hop, rhythm and blues (R & B), ethnic folk dancing,
a marionette show, and Hiromi Uehara, the Japanese jazz pianist.
She put on an outstanding show and the audience
gave her a standing ovation!
There was so much that we did not see even 10% of the events.
Next year, we will see more.

♪ 裏庭での遊び（Backyard play）♪
アメリカの夏休みの大半は、近所の友達と裏庭で遊んでます。
今年は、大きな木の下で小さなプラスチックで出来た兵隊を
色々な所に置いて、戦っている陣地を作りました。
みんなは、ベ−キングソ−ダ−（重曹）と酢を結合することによって
噴火する火山を作りました。
みんなは、野球のバットなどを刀（剣）と見立てて、自分達で想像した
ストリ−のスタ−ウォ−ズや指輪物語のゲ−ムをしました。
とりわけたくさんのスポ−ツをしました。
ワィフルボ−ル（ソフト野球）、タッチフットボ−ル（フットボ−ルごっこ）
サッカ−や野球などをしました。
みなさんに、７枚の写真をお送りしてます。
♪ Backyard play ♪
The best part of summer vacation in America is playing
in the big backyard with our neighborhood friends.
This year we set up battlefields
with plastic soldiers under a big tree.
We made a volcano that erupted by combining vinegar with baking soda.
We played lots of imaginary Star Wars and Lord of the Rings
games using baseball bats for swords.
Most of all, we played lots of sports - whiffle ball (soft baseball),
touch football (tag football), soccer and basketball.

♪ グランマの家の近所（ Grandma's neighborhood ）♪
グランマの家の廻りの近所は、道路が広い通りで車が通るのが少ないので、
友達の家々に遊びに行くのは容易で危なくありません。
デレクとミッチは、昨年想像力を育む遊びのできる楽しい棲み家でもある、
木の上に小屋を建てました。
今年は、アイスクリ−ムトラックが一週間の４日間の
午後に訪れることを始めました。
アイスクリ−ムトラックのお店は、普通は私たちの近所にやってきません。
なぜならそんなに多くの家もありませんし子供達も少ないです。
私たちは、いとこのザクが住んでいる、アイスクリ−ムトラックのお店が
営業している地区の通りへ追って行きました。
そして、私たちの近所にも来てくれるように頼みました。
お店の人は聞いてくれました。
そして、次の日から来てくれました！！
素晴らしいサ−ビスですね！！！
私たちは、アメリカの人々が、日本の色々な近所に来てくれる
「やきいも屋さん」や「わらび餅屋さん」の軽トラックを見ると
とても驚くことでしょう。

♪ Grandma's neighborhood ♪
Grandma's neighborhood has very wide streets and few cars
so it is easy and safe to visit our friends' houses.
D and M built a tree house last year that is a good place
for imaginary games.
This year the ice cream truck has started
to visit four evenings a week.
They do not usually come to our neighorhood
because there are fewer houses and children.
We chased them down the street in a busier neighborhood
where Cousin Z lives and asked them to come to our neighborhood.
They listened and they came the next day!
Great service!
We think Americans would be very surprised at the yaki imo trucks
and the warabi mochi trucks that come to our Japanese neighorhood.

♪ 勉強（ Study ）♪
今年はウィシュボンシリ−ズ（仔犬の冒険物語）から、
最初の英語の章付のある本を読みました。
この本はいとこのザクがケンと同じ年齢の時に読んだ本です。
いとこのザクは、ケンの読んだ後の言葉の内容を聞いて、ケンがどれくらい
理解しているのか解ると話しました。
ジョ−イは、始めての英語の本「ヒップ オン ポップ」を読みました。
今年はマム（私）とグランマが手伝いながら一緒に読みました。
また、ジョ−イはテレビや新聞や別の本の言葉を、
兄が学んでいるように解ろうとしてます。
二人は毎日、日本の本を読んだり宿題をして、
日本の夏休みにやっておく事もしていました。
私たちは、秋に鳥たちの渡りの始まりがあるので、ホ−ク（鷹）マウンテンに
旅行しました。生きたフクロウが本来持っている肉食の性質の荒々しい面の
講義も聞きました。 http://www.hawkmountain.org/
鳥たちを捜すために、４km以上よりも多くのハイキングをしました
とても大きくて美しいヒメコンドルや渡りツバメたちを見る事が出来ました。
私たちは、ホ−ク（鷹）マウンテンの低い所にある昔ながらの
オ−ルドファッションの列車に乗るためにWK & S 鉄道に訪れました。

ほとんど毎年この列車に乗車しています。
普通は蒸気機関車が列車を引くのですが、今年はディゼル車が
引いていました。それは蒸気機関車よりも速くて、
煙も出ないので汚れるものではありません。
私たちはまた、ロ−スティングイァ−ズのコ−ンフェスティバルと呼ばれる
アメリカ先住民族のパウワウの歌と踊りの祭りにも行きました。
ホスト種族は、ヨ−ロッパからの移住者が来たときから、この地域に住んで
いた現地の先住の人々であるデルウェア族の方々です。

私たちは前にも彼等のイベントに訪れました。
そしてケンの昨年の夏の宿題のひとつは、北部九州の昔から住んでいる
原地の人々とデルウェア族を比較するレポ−トでした。
今年のパウワウは、伝統のあるドラミングで異なる種族と衣装からなる
歌と踊りで輪を作って祭りをしていました。
伝統工芸のたくさんの実演もありました。
親切なひとりの男性の方は、服とロ−プを作るために動物の皮と植物を使う
たくさん実演模様を見せてくれました。
それはとてもおもしろかったです。
私たちの最後のイベントは、
科学と技術のダビンチ・ディスカバリ−センタ−に行くことでしょう。

二人は、みんなのお気に入りのディスカバリ−チャンネル番組の
＜マイスバスタ−＞の中のひとつのような印象を与える
「おかしくて簡単な科学の神話」のイベントにも行こうと思ってます。
私は、二人がなにも吹き飛ばさないようにと思ってます！！
ケンとジョ−イと仲の良い友達は、酢と重曹を使って、みんなの火山「噴火」
を作って、台所の化学の勉強をしました。
みんなは、手作り工作として、模型のスケ−トボ−ドのトイを走らせるための
スケ−トボ−ドスタジアムを作りました。
昨年の夏休みの中で、みんなはアメリカ先住民の雑木林でできた
避難小屋建てて、ダンボ−ルと布によって、植民地時代の
道具と武器を作りました。
そしてみんなで考えたスタ−ウォ−ズ物語のビデオを撮って作りました。
ジョ−イはまた、近所の野生の生き物を見つけるのが好きです。
ジョ−イは、鳥たちやセミ、リスやシマリスを見つけました。
今年は、赤い尾っぽの鷹や羽を震わせて音を出すハチドリ、
亡くなったマウスやスカンクの骨なども見ました。

私たちは、とても忙しくにぎやかです。
私たちは、みなさんが楽しい夏を過ごされることを心より願っております。

♪ Study ♪
This year Ken read his first English chapter book
from the Wishbone series.
This was a book Cousin Z read when he was the same age.
He listened to Ken's verbal summary and said
that Ken does understand what he is reading.
Joy read his very first English book, Hop On Pop,
this year with help from Mom and Grandma.
Now he tries to read some words from the TV, newspaper
and other books just like his big brother.
They did their Japanese summer vacation every day, too,
including reading Japanese books.
We traveled to Hawk Mountain http://www.hawkmountain.org/
for the beginning of the autumn bird migration.
We heard a lecture about raptors that had live owl, too.
We hiked more than 4 kilometers to look for birds.
We saw some turkey vultures which are very large and beautiful
and some migrating swallows.
At the bottom of Hawk Mountain, we went to the
WK & S Railroad http://www.kemptontrain.com/ to ride
an old-fashioned train. We ride this almost every year.
Usually a steam engine pulls the train, but this year,
there was a diesel engine.
It went much faster than the steam engine, and it is not as dirty.
We also went to a Native American powwow called
the Roasting Ears of Corn Festival. http://www.lenape.org/
The host tribe is the Lenape tribe which is
the original native people that lived in this area
when the European settlers came.
We have visited their events before, and Ken did a report comparing
the Lenape tribe with the native people of northern Kyushu last year
for his summer project.
This year's powwow had a traditional drum circle with traditional
singing and dancers with costumes from different tribes.
There were many demonstrations of traditional crafts.
One kind man showed us many aspects of using animal skins
and plants for making clothes and rope.
It was very interesting.
Our last event will be to go to the Da Vinci Discovery Center
of Science and Technology. http://www.davinci-center.org/
They are having a special program called
"Silly Simple Science Myths"
which sounds like one of our favorite
Discovery Channel programs, Myth Busters.
I hope they do not blow anything up!
Ken, Jo and their friends learned about kitchen chemistry
using vinegar and baking soda to make their volcano 'erupt',
and they built their own skateboard stadiums for their
miniature skateboard toys as part of their crafts projects.
In past years, they have built a Native American brush shelter,
created colonial tools and weapons out of cardboard and cloth,
and made Star Wars videos.
Jo also likes to spot the neighborhood wildlife.
He spots backyard birds, cicadas, squirrels, and chipmunks.
This year he saw a red-tailed hawk, humming birds, a dead mouse
and a skunk skeleton.
We have been very busy. We hope you had a good summer, too.

第３号、最後まで読んで頂きありがとうございます。
ジャンも子供たちもアメリカでの夏休みもあと一週間ほどで終わり、
8月31日に帰国します。アメリカのグランパ、グランマ、
いとこのザク、近所の友人が少し寂しいがります。
グランマはみんなが出かける時は、ちょぴり泣き出してしまいます。
（ また来年の夏休みを楽しみに待ちましょう 。）
9月1日は始業式なので、ケンとジョ−イは次の日は登校日です。
少しきついでしょうが、始業式を出れば土、日の休みになるので
大丈夫でしょう。
さて、9月からは音声付のレッスンも始めようと思います。
ジャンは昨年、ケンが小学校6年生の時に、総合学習の時間に英語を6年生の
クラスの生徒に教えていました。その時、生徒達に英語の発音の練習する時に
仏壇とかにあるリンとリン棒を使って発音を教えたそうです。
ケンのクラスの担任の先生は感動したそうです。私も知らないので、
音声付レッスンの時に披露してもらいましょう。
日本の大学や子供塾での英語の講師の経験を持ち、
ジョウジタウン大学の http://www.georgetown.edu/
TESOL（英語教授法）のMAT（ Master of Arts teaching )の資格も持つ
ジャンの楽しいお話をご期待下さい。
